Copyright

Writetimes retains no copyright to anything our members produce. If we post any original works on our site or in our newsletter, we will do so with a copyright notice identifying the copyright owner.

Copyright may seem complicated and there are some myths about copyright. One of the most prevalent is the idea that mailing something you’ve created to yourself somehow proves your rights. This is a myth. The moment you produce some creative work, it belongs to you. Mailing it to yourself is not proof in itself of ownership. Filing for the copyright on your work is extra protection in the event your work is plagiarized or you yourself are accused of plagiarizing the work of others.  Filing a copyright is not free. There a different fees for each unique filing. The US Copyright office offers tutorials to help you determine what you can file a copyright for and how to get through the process.

Self Publishing Resources

Bowkers

Bowkers is the only “official” seller of ISBN numbers and Barcodes, in the United States. You can purchase one ISBN number and Code or a block of ISBN numbers. ISBN numbers and barcodes are required on books that are sold in the United States.

Selfpublishing advice.org

This page tells you almost everything you need to know about the ISBN number.

Writetimes NOTE: There are many self publishing companies out there selling ISBN numbers at seemingly low rates. These organizations buy blocks of ISBN numbers from Bowkers and bundle them with publishing services. When you see that cheap price for those ISBN numbers it means you will not actually be the publisher of record for your book. Yes, you will pay 29.99 for the ISBN “use” but you will not own that ISBN number. If you want complete control over the publishing of your work, buy your ISBN numbers from Bowkers.
